CHESLEY ONG
CREATIVE DIRECTOR


Dance has been part of Chesley's life since she was four years old. From her early training in ballet, tap, and jazz to discovering her passion for hip hop and later performing with the competitive team 220 in San Diego, dance has shaped not only the artist she became, but the leader she is today.

After college and becoming a mother of three, life naturally shifted her priorities. Like many parents, she wondered if that chapter of dance had come to an end. Returning to re.DEFINE years later reminded her that passion doesn't disappear—it evolves. That experience deepened her purpose as both a dancer and a director, proving that growth can begin again in every season of life.

Today, Chesley leads re.DEFINE Collective with warmth, respect, and genuine care for every dancer. She believes the strongest teams are built on trust, open communication, and creating a space where people feel safe to be themselves. While she values hard work and artistic excellence, she also believes dance should be joyful, collaborative, and something dancers look forward to every week.

For Chesley, Collective is more than a performance team—it's a community where dancers continue to challenge themselves, support one another, and grow together. Her hope is that every dancer leaves rehearsal feeling stronger, more confident, and reminded that they belong.

Joining a performance team is an exciting step, and we want you to feel confident before making that commitment. Here are a few questions we hear most often to help you decide if Collective is the right fit for you.

 

  • Yes. Collective is designed for experienced dancers who are comfortable learning choreography quickly and are looking to continue growing in a collaborative performance environment.

  • There are several ways to join Collective.

    Our primary opportunities are our annual Auditions, typically held each January, and our Mid-Season Open Rehearsals, which allow dancers to experience the team environment before placement.

    We also offer private auditions or evaluations throughout the year when appropriate.

    Our directors carefully consider each dancer's skill, experience, growth potential, and overall fit to ensure they're placed where they'll be challenged, supported, and set up for success. Dancers who are selected will be invited to join Collective.

  • That's perfectly okay.

    Many dancers begin with RECRUITS, our adult training team, before moving to Collective. Others join Collective directly based on their previous experience.

    Our goal is to place every dancer where they'll experience the most growth, confidence, and success. Every dancer's journey is different, and we're here to help guide that path.

  • Collective rehearses every Wednesday from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM throughout the season.

    We encourage our dancers to attend rehearsals consistently, come prepared, practice outside of rehearsal, and continue training beyond our studio whenever possible. Growth comes from the work you put in both together and on your own.

    While we value commitment and accountability, we also understand that life happens. We strive to support our dancers in balancing work, school, family, and other responsibilities while honoring the commitment they've made to their teammates.

  • Yes. Collective is a performance team, and every member is expected to participate in performances throughout the season.

    Performance opportunities and seasonal expectations are discussed during the Audition or Open Rehearsal process so everyone understands the team's commitment before deciding whether it's the right fit.

  • Absolutely.

    Many dancers choose to continue training through our weekly classes without joining a performance team. Whether your goal is to perform or simply continue learning, there's always a place for you at re.DEFINE.

DENNIS PHAM
CREATIVE DIRECTOR


Dennis Pham believes dance has the power to build confidence, one rehearsal at a time.

His dance journey began in high school, where he and his friends started a dance club from the ground up. From learning choreography on YouTube to performing at school events, those early experiences sparked a passion that followed him through college, where he competed, became an artistic director, and continued exploring styles like popping and freestyle.

After graduating, Dennis stepped away from dance for a few years. When he decided it was time to come back, a simple search for a nearby dance studio led him to re.DEFINE. What started as a fresh start quickly became a community that felt like home.

Today, Dennis brings that same passion to re.DEFINE Juniors. He believes every dancer grows at their own pace and that confidence comes from patience, encouragement, and celebrating progress along the way. His goal is to create an environment where young dancers feel supported, inspired, and excited to become the best versions of themselves.

Before You Take the Next Step

Joining a performance team is an exciting milestone, and we want both dancers and parents to feel confident before taking that next step. Here are answers to some of the questions we receive most often.

 

  • No. We look for dancers who are eager to learn, work hard, and grow. Previous performance team experience isn't required.

  • Juniors rehearses every Sunday from 4:00–7:00 PM. We encourage dancers to attend consistently so they can grow with the team and prepare for performances.

  • Recruits rehearses every Thursday from 7:00 PM–10:00 PM throughout the season.

    We encourage dancers to attend consistently, come prepared, practice outside of rehearsal, and continue training whenever possible. We value commitment and accountability while understanding that dancers are also balancing work, school, family, and other responsibilities.

  • Yes. Parents are welcome to watch rehearsals from our viewing area, affectionately known as "The Fish Tank." If you prefer, you're also welcome to drop your dancer off and return near the end of rehearsal to watch the final run-through and see what they've been working on.

  • Yes. Juniors is a performance team, and rehearsals are designed to prepare dancers for performances throughout the season.

  • Absolutely! In fact, we highly encourage it. Almost all of our current Juniors dancers are enrolled in at least one weekly studio class. Regular classes provide additional technique, versatility, and training that complement team rehearsals and help dancers continue to grow.

Recruits was created for dancers who are ready for more challenge, consistency, and connection than a weekly class can provide.

The team gives dancers the opportunity to train more intentionally, learn choreography in a rehearsal environment, prepare for performances, and understand what it means to contribute to something larger than themselves.

Some dancers join Recruits as the next step toward Collective. Others discover that Recruits is exactly where they want to continue growing. There is no pressure to follow one path. What matters most is finding the team where you feel challenged, supported, and inspired.

GABE FLORES
CREATIVE DIRECTOR


For Gabe Flores, dance has always been about more than learning choreography. It's about discovering what's possible.

His journey began over 17 years ago, exploring breaking, funk styles, popping, and eventually choreography. Along the way, he trained with inspiring mentors and became part of teams that challenged him to grow, shaping not only the way he dances, but also the way he leads.

When Gabe joined re.DEFINE, he found more than a dance team. He found a second home. The encouragement, friendships, and opportunities he experienced sparked a passion that continues to inspire him today.

Now, as Creative Director of Recruits, Gabe strives to create that same experience for every dancer who walks through the studio doors. He believes growth starts with curiosity, a willingness to embrace challenges, and someone who believes in you before you believe in yourself.

More than anything, Gabe hopes every dancer leaves Recruits more confident, more capable, and inspired to keep growing long after rehearsal ends.

  • Absolutely. Weekly classes are available for dancers who want to continue learning without joining a performance team. Team members are also encouraged to continue taking classes as part of their ongoing training.

For Mappy and Margela, Munchkins is more than a performance team - it's where the culture of re.DEFINE begins.

As Studio Owners, they intentionally lead Munchkins to introduce young dancers to the same values that define every part of re.DEFINE: confidence, kindness, teamwork, respect, and a genuine love for dance. They believe a child's earliest experiences should be positive, encouraging, and filled with opportunities to grow both as dancers and as individuals.

Now parents themselves, Mappy and Margela understand the importance of creating a safe, welcoming environment where children feel seen, supported, and excited to learn. Their hope is that every child leaves class with greater confidence, meaningful friendships, and a smile that makes them excited to come back the following week.

To them, Munchkins isn't simply the youngest team—it's where lifelong dancers, lasting friendships, and the re.DEFINE family begin.

During our Open Classes or a private evaluation, our directors will determine if Munchkins is the right fit based on your child's experience, readiness, and potential.

  • Dancers typically join through our Munchkins Open Classes, which are held during select times throughout the season. We also offer annual auditions and private evaluations when appropriate. After meeting your child, our directors will determine if Munchkins is the best placement for their current stage of development.
